Are Cobra Kit Cars going green?

Not quite – but if you were at the International Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition in Anaheim last week, your surprised eyes would have spotted an apparent Shelby Cobra.

As you waded through tons of electric vehicles and scooters you’d see this:

Once the immediate shock wore off, you’d discover that HST Automotive has developed a kit car running on batteries.

The batteries are produced by K2 Energy Solutions of Henderson, Nevada. K2 specializes in in rechargeable Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries for electric vehicles.

No word on when this eco-friendly beauty will be available to the general public.

If you still prefer the smell of gasoline though, you can acquire a not quite so politically correct cobra kit car here .

Pssst…looking for a great deal on a cobra kit car?

Sometimes finding an affordable cobra kit car is just a matter of checking with the local high school’s auto mechanics department.

Case in point – Brighton High School in Colorado is putting together a 1967 Cobra 427 kit car… and they intend on selling it.

Now the kit – valued at approx 18K – was donated by Peggy Schmidt who had inherited it.

Later, a Brighton High School graduate Josh Jones donated his Ford engine… followed by an $800 rear differential from Truck Parts Specialist in Commerce City.

Other donations keep arriving, including a commitment from Sherwin Williams automotive to donate the materials to paint the car. You can read more about this story here.

Although they are still accepting donated parts, eventually the car will be finished and it seems like win-win for both buyer and seller.

There is dedicated student labor and donated parts so their costs are negligible. When completed, they’ll likely take a fair price and you’ll save the huge mark-up a private seller may charge after buying the kit, investing a ton of time and money and intent on recouping it all.

If you’re in the market for a cobra kit car it’s definitely worth a phone call. To get an update on how the project is coming along, contact auto mechanics teacher Phill Kiel at 303-655-4194

Or – if you can’t wait ’til spring – you can find one here now.

Cobra Kit Cars – the very cool car that started it all

Cobra Kit Cars are easily the best known kit car by both experts and the casual car fan. Why? Well let’s go back in time.

Once upon a time there was a very cool British sports car – the AC Ace built by AC Cars. This classic two seater with an alloy body made it’s debut in 1953. It featured the old AC’s functional two litre straight six engine. Upgrades continued through the late fifties – even while the car raced at Le Mans.

Then an American named Carroll Shelby approached AC with a proposal and the result was the aluminum bodied AC Cobra featuring a Ford V-8 first produced in 1962. Shelby really ramped up the power to the already nimble AC chassis. The AC Cobra featured both the 289 and 427 Ford engines. The result of this collaboration? Head turning styling with power to spare!

Those sexy fenders, the too cool side exiting exhaust (before the corvette copied it), the ominous hood scoop and a sparse but very serious cockpit – the AC Cobra 427 was the ultimate roadster!

Kit car makers figured if they combined this car’s brash uniqueness (not anyone will take the reigns of a Cobra) with the economy of a do it yourself kit car they might have a winner.

And they did. A cobra kit car simply is a magnet for those who have heard the rumble and seen the sheer beauty of this machine.

There are so many choices now with so many cobra kit cars available. How much do you want to spend? How much time will be involved in the creation of your dream machine? Will you need help or can you pull it off with your current automotive skills and resources?

The again – maybe you just want the key and the driving thrill – and let someone else to look after the engineering. If that’s the case just Click here to find your Cobra Kit Car!
